Sufi is a well known word. You might have heard the words Sufi music and sufi inspired music, in cae you are a music lover and if you are a person who loves to know about religions and prayer, you would definitely know- prayers of sufism are known for dedication to the highest self.

The origin of Sufi may be attributed to many of the explanations, out of which i would like to mention two such more advocated origins:

You might have listened to the word, saaf. This word has origin in Arabic word safa, which means clean or pure. With this genesis, sufis are those who believe in purity, obviously cleanliness of spirit and purity of thoughts.

From Suf (wool):

Other origin of Sufi is thought to be from suf which means wool. One of the probable reasons may be that earlier these saints ued to wear woolen dresses and with the uniform they were identified as Sufi.
