Project and Project Managers

You might have heard of discussions about whether a particular activity is a project or not. Can we really differentiate between project and non-project activities.
Well, as per definition of Project Management Institute (PMI) , we can differentiate a project activity from non-project activities based on definition on projects. A concise definition is that It's a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.
A project is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources. A project is unique in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal. Accordingly project team is also unique.
The construction of an airport, oil refinery construction and commissioning, new offshore terminal, cross country pipelines are some examples of projects. All these activities have defined beginning and end and have a well-defined scope and resources. They are unique and are built by a unique team constituted for that particular project.
Project management, then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.
Project management processes fall into five groups:
*       Initiating
*       Planning
*       Executing
*       Monitoring and Controlling
*       Closing

To co-ordinate all these activities, a project manager is required. The question is who is a Successful Project Manager and is there any recipe to follow if one wants to succeed as a project manager?
