Reading Comprehension: What is it and why it is rated so high? Four most salient requisites of Reading Comprehension (RC) are speed, understanding, retention & application for problem solving or ability to derive conclusions while reading various types of reading materials. Let us call it quadrangle of reading comprehension, which has its sides as  Understanding or accuracy, Speed, Application & Retention (USAR). If you are aiming to increase RC abilities you can aim at any one or all of them. Believe me for increasing it you have to really stretch yourself in many dimensions.                                                                                                                  ...

The most brilliant mathematician of pre-independence days of India, Ramanujan was born in 18887 & lived up to 1920 in his physical abodes. His name needs no introduction now as a distinguished mathematician, awarded wi th a FRS at very young age. He is always remembered as a talent outburst developed among scant resources. Known for his famous works like Ramanujan prime, Ramanujan theta function, Ramanujan Squares and many infinite series, he was definitely blessed with godly talents in mathematics. Born in south India, at pious bank of Cauvery river in a small religious town of Kumbakonam, Ramanujan ways of developing extraordinary facets in mathematics have been well known in the world today, but needless to say, during his lifetime he had to fight tooth and nail to get recognition in his field. MEDITATION HELPFUL IN MAKING US A BETTER LEARNER, A BETTER SCORER Have you seen how a compressed spring reacts when it is set free, it elongates to get its state back. Have you come across the story of Arjuna and Dronacharya wherein he teaches the importance of single aim and have you not noted aimless roaming of your mind worth nothing but misery. In the same way the pressures of several types in our day to day life take our life in a reactive state. You get stressed and behave at times in ways, which you yourself later feel that are uncharacteristic of you. The stress is getting you, you are losing your genuine state. The process of reclaiming your original self, connect to it, celebrate it, rejoice it is known as meditation. It connects you to the present and frees you from the bondage of past impression and future obsessions. It creates link and understanding with the nature. Have you felt on any day that you are in office but thinking of home or on a Sunday mornin...

SCIENTIST WHO SOLD HIS MILLION DOLLAR PATENT FOR FREE Have you gone through life story of a scientist who was interested in inventions than in claiming patents. I came across one such Indian great genius, polymath, whose name is known by science fraternity but some of his works which were page turners in the communication Industry were claimed by others.  Yes, you are right, I am taking about Sir J.C.Bose, one  of the most eminent Indian scientists. Born in the year 1858 and lived up to 1937, Mr. Bose had shown his acumen as physicist, biologist, archaeologist as well as sci-fi writer. How come, he could be gifted with so much of talent, but yes he was.  Born in a family of Dy Magistrate and educated in Bengali medium in early days of his school education, was an extraordinary customer of science. For some time at London university, he studied medicine and finally graduated from Christ’s college, Cambridge in Natural Science.  He started his career a...

MISSILE DREAMS Which one is true for you? Whether you work for some goals made out of your dreams or your goals are set by someone else and it is your mundane duty to go and meet some of these targets without giving any attention to whether they are part of your big picture, you own success story. . Humbly asking: Have you developed your own vision of your life? Do you dream often and challenge the constraints too often? Let me start with the favorite lines of missile man, Late APJ Kalam- "You have to dream before your dreams can come true." Do you think, it is applicable to all of us? The more significant is how and why it is applicable to all of us. To start with, imagination, suggestion and dictate are very much pre-requisite for the progress, is not an unknown fact. Also that dreams are definitely our first destination. They are picture frames holding images of our own imaginations, imagery for which you are ready to allocate your golden eggs of time and resources...

FEAR THE MAGIC RECIPE OF HOLLYWOOD AND BOLLYWOOD Fear as an emotion is frequently depicted in Hindi and English movies. Entry of the villain with special heart pacing music or Horse Gallop (tag-tag-tag-tag..) so that each time he enters, there is pin drop silence in the movie hall and fear is written larg e on each and every one in the picture hall. You might be remembering those words- "Not for people with weak heart!" Villains of Bollywood and Hollywood are given fiery dialogues, violent scenes and they are made the characters with huge mood swings and fear factors so that killing even an army of men without a single thought is shown to be in their genes.  . Should we not agree that the movies showing gang wars, dacoits, criminals are nothing but fear decorated on the silver or big screens. We enjoy the fear on big screen so much that such movies were great hits. Sholay, starting Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra can also be seen as a fear extension counter ...

KNOW CAUSES TO KILL THE FEAR In the last post, we discussed that knowing our fear factors is important for all of us and it is a fact that if we study the mechanism of fear generation, it can help us in eliminating some of our worst fears. Fear even for a small duration of the day or night ca shake your confidence and can destroy your mood for the day or even for the week. Have you ever thought, what are the most frequent mechanisms or causes of fear? Many Psychologists have mentioned the most frequent reasons of fear and these are not very strange or something which we cannot think of. The first reason said is of actual pain felt due to wounds and is the simplest cause of fear. I think, this is obvious that neurons are sensing the pain in body, brain processes it and sends back the response in terms of high rate of breathing, racing heart, palpitation, trembling, loss of cognitive functions, etc . However, you will be surprised to know that most of the time fear is no...
FEAR FACTOR None of us can claim that we were not afraid by some or other fear factor in the life. Fear is said to be a negative emotion. Negative because it blocks or limits our cognitive functions, the ability to think rationally. You might have noted that the fear changes our behavior dramatically. We may be brave in hundred challenging situations but may get terrified by some other cause of fear. I remember one incident when one of my friends, who was standing in the balcony of first floor in college hostel, saw a snake crawling on the ground floor and got so terrified that he closed the room doors and was virtually shaking even inside the room. Not to mention, otherwise he was a brave fellow in most of the situations. We can understand fear to be originated from our mind like other emotions. Is it not quite similar to audio and visual alarms raised by machines or relays under abnormal operating conditions? Thus, the brain gives us a perception of danger and can be seen as bio...
