KNOW CAUSES TO KILL THE FEAR
In the last post, we discussed that knowing our fear factors is important for all of us and it is a fact that if we study the mechanism of fear generation, it can help us in eliminating some of our worst fears. Fear even for a small duration of the day or night ca shake your confidence and can destroy your mood for the day or even for the week.
Have you ever thought, what are the most frequent mechanisms or causes of fear?
Many Psychologists have mentioned the most frequent reasons of fear and these are not very strange or something which we cannot think of.
The first reason said is of actual pain felt due to wounds and is the simplest cause of fear. I think, this is obvious that neurons are sensing the pain in body, brain processes it and sends back the response in terms of high rate of breathing, racing heart, palpitation, trembling, loss of cognitive functions, etc . However, you will be surprised to know that most of the time fear is not because of direct impact or painful wounds.
So, what are other prominent reasons of fear.
Well, it said that our mind records the painful events along with cause and creates similar symptoms like labored breathing, palpitation, trembling, etc. whenever it senses that same or similar cause of fear has come up. So, past painful sensations are reproduced.
To illustrate, a child, attracted by the brightness of a flame, grasps it and is badly burnt in consequence. Subsequently, on seeing the flame, he feels fear. Upon seeing the flame again, a state of diffused nervous excitement similar to that which accompanied the actual burning will be re-excited causing symptoms like constriction of the superficial blood vessels, palpitation, trembling, etc. There may be a tendency to avoid the flame.
Most of us might have felt the fear due to sudden noise or high intensity of light. A very high intensity and sudden change in level of exposure to stimulus like very high intensity of noise, very bright flame can also create fear . Definitely, measure of high intensity is dependent on the time and state of mind. It means that If you are half asleep and even a spoon is dropped, that is a high rate of change of noise and you may get afraid.
Does it not remind us of Faradays’s law of electromagnetic induction that EMF produced is proportional to rate of change of electromagnetic flux. There seems to be some mechanism in our mind which is tracking and recording rate of change of various stimulus and then based on high rate of change and high amplitude raising the alarm in form of fear.
Other fear factor is strangeness of encountered object. Like, a lantern moving without any support in a hostel terrifies students as mind cannot determine its type and required response.
In short, the mind analyzes the parameters related to pain tries to manage on itself and wherever it find trouble in adjusting its parameters to cope up and get back the comfort zone status of body and mind, it signals fear.
Have you noted some other prominent reason or mechanism of fear. If so, Please share.
