ENJOY A PART FROM MY UPCOMING THRILLER: THE HAT HUNTER
Chapter 1
MANU AGREES TO TAKE THE
CASE
Hotel Chandra at Patna, in the state
capital of Bihar was a sensible place to meet him, Manu, my old college friend
at NIT, Patna.
Even today, our gang chatted often about
how he used to examine cases of towel exchange and missing under wears from the
hostel premises. Once, examining the case of stolen bicycle from the hostel, he
had caught hold of son of our professor and the Prof had threatened him in
return that he would ensure that he never gets his final Grad certificates. I
too had naughty, near and dear moments together with Manu and my college gang
and Manu today’s top sleuth of CBI was quite noticeable in the lot.
I never knew, whether he probed and got
similar results even now! However, last week Times Day named him ‘King
Detective’ after he cracked the case of absconding Kalya, a million dollar
corporate. I liked his journey from amateur detective to being the top most
detective cop.
I was one of the software coder in a
multinational at Delhi. Needless to say, life was hacked by these codes but
thanks to the social apps, which have really got us back in a single group. All
my gang and other guys of the batch are now in a single Whatsap group and we
could chat endless things sharing repeated jokes, cricket, politics and all.
One fine morning he was added to the group and introduced by admin- “ Welcome
Manu to the group.”
So, it all started with the group,
followed by his invitation to everyone to visit Patna, his own city. Many
consented but three years passed and no one could make it. Now, I was here to
see him.
I was enjoying my holidays at the Hotel
and it would be too fantastic to meet Manu, aka, Manav Singh just after a few
minutes.
It was same story with the newspapers
today also. They had painted the story of rapes, murder, extortion, corruption
charges and smiling demons with folded hands with absconded values. Lord knows
what held the future of this state. The Jungal Raj was back or not was still
unanswered, but people had started closing their doors before 10.
I got his text- “Reaching shortly, Anu.”
I was in the drive through hotel lobby, waiting for his car to
come. Police patrol van stopped and cops came out as if sniffing something in
the air, followed by a Mercedes SLS coming to thunderous halt. He stepped out
of it waiving his hand to me! The manager of the hotel and security moved
forward to welcome him but his two black cat boys stopped them and advised to
maintain distance with their stance.
He had not changed at all, he always liked an air of superiority
like a Bollywood Hero and now he seemed to become one in Policing.
We were soon at a table reserved in a semiprivate cabin.
He took out his black goggles to reveal his blue seeking eyes
with smile. We shook hands, exchanged teeth revealing pleasant smiles and
offered light hugs to each other.
On the dining table, we sat across and started some chit chat
about food. “Teekha Murg is speciality here but I like chicken Julienne
Kabab”. From food soon we were discussing whereabouts of each other.
“You must be staying here for a week, are not you?”- He asked.
“Yes” I said- “ What about you.”
“Well, have a look at my schedule. Tomorrow at inauguration of
Petrochemical complex at Barauni, to attend tea party with our Prime Minister, next
day is Birthday party of youngest son of our CM and many such events.”
“So, You are booked in all these VIP parties. When do you do job
of a detective.”
“ Old buddy, these are my social commitments and that too when I
am on a week long Holiday. PM has specifically desired to meet me
tomorrow regarding so called incidents of intolerance.”
“Gaya?”- I asked. “What
happened, something special with Gaya”
“Nothing more than that I was thinking of the last winter that I spent in
Gaya looking relentlessly for the culprits of Red Field case when all of a
sudden Gaya- Hot water reservoir was red with gushing blood from some unknown
source”
It flashed to me. A murder had been committed near Hot water Kund (Reservoir) at Gaya and
the case was quite complicated. Manu had solved that case within fortnight and
he was lauded with appreciations from all corners. We were first few to like
his Face Book status when he had refused to receive award from Minister Sitish
Kumar, saying he was just doing his duty and uncovered a nexus of politicians
behind the murder leading to splits in his party.
“ Do you still remember! We used to sit on
the grass near Gymkhana and solve your favorite cases in the college. I miss
your togetherness of those moments when you used to be on any such case to
crack.”
“ HaHa..”- He laughed. “Spoilt Guy, I was”
“ But I always liked your caring company
and I like it more even today. You have some extra charm.”
He was same Manu but now , I
could not absorb his compliments.
I had seen him erring so
many times, unnecessarily going into details in college and had experience of the methods he used
to employ.
“ I want to feel your working- top detective of eastern India-
Mr. Manav Singh. Would you let me work with you for a week on some case.”
“Well not now, Party time today.”- He said.
“No buddy, starting from today only. I wanted to tell you over
phone but I thought later that only after meeting you I will let you know this.
A beautiful, gorgeous girl working with me and a good friend of mine is getting
threats of murder every now and then. One fine evening, when we were together
someone shot at her and nearly missed with bullet hitting a painting behind her
on the wall. Police is of no avail and she wanted some urgent help. I urge your
services in this case Manu. Now- don’t say No to it.”
“Well, I am not a government officer now, as you know. Three
officers of same batch of police services have started this detective service-
Atmaarjan. Our motive is to reach to the truth of cases we deal and help the
real needy people.”- He had put his hat and goggles on the table and his eyes
were more vivid now, eyes of detective always explore something in each corner.
“Due to my golden days in Police department, I still hold god
rapport with them and in fact I get a lot of support from them.”- He said.
“ OK, my dude, you have all
this under your hat and that’s why people from north or south equally seek your
help in complex cases. You must be overbooked.”
